Maurice Hooker v Jose Carlos Ramirez, WBC World and WBO World Light-Welterweight Titles, Sky Sports
Love this fight. Two world titles on the line as Maurice Hooker (26-0-3) puts his WBO title on the line against WBC champion Jose Carlos Ramirez (24-0). Hooker shocked many when he went to England in 2018 to challenge champion Terry Flanagan and came home with the belt. How Jerry Jakubco scored it 117-111 for Flanagan was an absolute disgrace, and even Deon Duarte’s 115-113 was far too close. Hooker dominated and just about won the title via split decision as the judges seemed intent on trying to rob him. At 5’ 11” with an 80”reach Hooker is a seriously awkward (and talented) fighter to box against.
Since the Flanagan win he’s defended it twice, a TKO win over Alex Saucedo and a UD win over overmatched Mikkel LesPierre. Ramirez won the vacant WBC title on points against Amir Imam also in 2018, and has also defended twice. A comfortable UD win over Antonio Orozco was followed by a very close MD win over Jose Zepada in February this year. Two unbeaten world champions going head to head in a genuine 50-50 here in what could be a outstanding, tactical boxing fight. The bookies have Ramirez favourite at 4/5, with Hooker 11/10. With 33 knockouts in 50 fights between them, don’t be deceived. I don’t think either man has the power to stop the other here, Hooker is 6/1 and Ramirez 9/2 for KO wins, seems unlikely to me. This should certainly go the full distance, which is 2/7, so either man by points is the bet. Ramirez is a shorter 5/4 for this, with Hooker 13/8. I’m going against the bookies here I think, as I fancy Hookers long reach and great jab to be the difference, and win the fight and the WBC title, in a close, possible SD fight.
BNC Tip – Hooker to win on points at 13/8
Other Notable Fight
Gervonta Davis v Ricardo Nunez, WBA Super World Super Featherweight title.
Gervonta Davis (21-0) defends his WBA Super World title, assuming he can make weight, against what should be hopelessly overmatched Ricardo Nunez (21-2). Davis has spent many months seemingly more interested in fighting with Floyd Mayweather on twitter than fighting actual top contenders, but they seem to back on good terms. Davis is Mayweather Promotions best bet to trying to be the next Floyd Mayweather. He starts a massive 1/20 here, and will knock out Nunez when he sees fit, which will be early. The power he has is ferocious, and at 24 years old, with better discipline and dedication, has the world at his feet. A Davis KO win is a formality here, it’s 1/8, so we need to pick a block of rounds. I like rounds 1-4 at a very good 11/10. The next block of 5-8 is a good 2/1 but Davis should be able to get him before then.
BNC Tip – Fight to end rounds 1-4 at 11/10
Tevin Farmer v Guillaume Frenois, IBF World Super Featherweight Title, Sky Sports
Farmer (29-4-1) defends his title against Frenois (46-1-1) is what will be a stay busy fight for the champion. Farmer is one of the most active world champions out there at the minute. But these sort of fights need to lead to bigger and better fights. Both are coming in here on the back of fights with Jono Carroll. Farmer beat him and Frenois could only draw. Farmer is a massive 1/20 here, with Frenois 10/1. I can see Farmer taking control early and boxing his way to a very conformable and wide points win, which is 4/9. If he really presses the action and wants to excite the fans, a KO win is 2/1 but that’s not really his style.
BNC Tip – Farmer to win on points 4/9
Yuriorkis Gamboa v Roman Martinez,
This would of been a big fight 5 or so years ago. Gamboa is a rather big 1/4 favourite, with Martinez 11/4. The loser doesn’t really have anywhere to go here, and at 36 and 37 years old the winner might not either. Gamboa to win on points at 4/5
